Burning Man Projects and Affiliations Theme Camp

Describe Your Burning Man Projects and Affiliations I have worked on Playasophy camp, dedicated to the spread of ideas on the playa. The last few years, we have operating a hookah and coffee lounge as a place for travellers to rest during a hot day, sharing stories and hopefully lessons they have learned with each other as well as the camp.

Interactivity Description Once again, Playasophy is bringing back our popular hookah lounge as THE place to chill during the hot hours of the day! Guests are welcome to sit beneath our shade structures and enjoy a smoke as well as delicious iced coffee surrounded by our middle eastern themed tapestries. The lounge will once again include a bar, for people who want to add a little something to their coffee. With our 4 foot by 10 foot sign and laser etched wood carvings, we hope to attract more visitors than ever!

Last year, we experimented with serving hot coffee in the mornings, to huge success. We're upgrading our coffee equipment to better handle the demand, both from our neighbors as well as people who stop by early in the day. In particular, we found coffee went great with the Zumba classes we host Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

We're also building out our after dark offerings to make Playasophy a 24 hour hang out spot. In the past we've had our Wonderdome, complete with the LED chandelier, pillows and futon, open for people to stop by on their way to or from inner Playa, but this year we're excited to turn it into a full blown soft space with a literal ton of foam. We had planned to include this last year, but unfortunately the foam did not arrive soon enough, so we're really excited to share the Land of Soft with our fellow guests this year! In addition, last year we discovered our burn barrel was a great place to keep warm during the frigid nights (as well as a way to make the most of our second frontage), so we're bringing firewood to make it a hangout spot as well as an effective way to get rid of MOOP at the end of the week.

Project Interactivity Primarily Day Time,Scheduled Events,Acculturation for First time Burners,Bar,Chill Space,Food Given

Number of Campmates 19 to 25

Acculturation As an experienced camp, Playasophy is well equipped to help acculture our new members. We limit the number of virgins we take every year so we make sure the camp remains experienced, and make sure to each them about the 10 principles, how to keep safe, and how to help others who may not know as much. In order to share this knowledge with the greater community, we are once again hosting our "What is Burning Man" talk, an open forum guided by our more senior members to share our knowledge with others and answer any questions they may have.

Physical Description The front of the camp consists of a shade structure with an adjacent dome 24' in diameter. The dome will be the Wonder Dome, a public hangout space, and the front portion of the shade structure will be used for the hookah lounge. The back of the shade structure is private space for members to put their tents, and next to it is a carport that we're using as our kitchen. Behind the shade structure, we have 3 yurts that are being used as additional sleeping space, so we need less of the shade structure as private space and use more for the hookah lounge. Near the yurts we will have a smaller private dome, 17' in diameter, for camp meetings, as well as a pair of evaporation pools. Finally, in the far back we will have parking space and space for the box truck that will bring our equipment up, and at the very back we will have an open space for us to put our burn barrel, which will double as a public hangout at night when we have firewood in the barrel.

Leave No Trace is a cornerstone of the Burning Man ethos and one of our Ten Principles. Practice the 5 R's: Rethink what you bring, Reduce trash when packing, Reuse, Recycle, Restore and Respect.,Make a written plan or detailed strategy for Leaving NO Trace. Your LNT crew should be different from your set-up crew. Hold people accountable within your camp.,Make arrangements to have everything picked up before the last camper departs. Leaving things behind is MOOP and will affect your standing with the Placement Team.

During Burning Man, our camp will: Clean as you go, and never let it hit the ground!,Adopt the principles and practices of Leave No Trace at Burning Man.,Acculturate all camp members about minimizing our impact on the playa, learn about the Fairy Shrimp and how to protect them too.,Conserve energy, use renewable energy sources and minimize waste.,Collect, reduce and properly dispose of grey and black water. (e.g. we will bring extra buckets to address any leaks.) Grey and black water is MOOP and of interest to the BLM and the Placement team. Report spills and emergencies immediately.,Use or creatively use discarded materials for all the components of our camp structure and decorations, so that our camp is sustainable year after year.

As we depart the playa, our camp will: Bring tools (rakes, magnetic rakes, brooms, MOOP sticks, etc) to clean and pick up every last nail and wood shard that dropped on the playa surface. We will leave our space and our surrounding spaces better than we found them.,Follow the guidelines for line sweeps – performing required multiple sweeps of our camp before leaving BRC. (One sweep is not enough. Do as many passes as necessary: the strength of the line sweep is in the number of people and passes.),Designate a LNT MOOP team within your camp. They will document all stages of your clean up and remain on playa if you are having any materials picked up. Anything left unattended in an empty camp is considered MOOP.,Secure all vehicles' loads to prevent windblown trash on the highway and in neighboring communities.
