Camp/Village Name? Playasophy Camp

Interactivity Description Playasophy’s goal has always been to facilitate the exchange of ideas, and we’ve found over the years the best way to do that is to give people a reason to hang around and talk to both playasophy members and each other. With that in mind, we’re bringing back our popular hookah lounge from last year, as well as making improvements so people continue to hang out and share ideas. We’re increasing the variety of drinks to appeal to people who don’t like coffee or caffeine, adding italian soda and sparkling water. We’re also looking into serving alcohol, one of the most common requests from last year, as well as fresh-squeezed juice as a healthier option.

In addition to the hookah lounge, we’re also building out the Wonderdome, a geodessic dome with controllable LED lights woven into the shade fabric. Last year many people came through and enjoyed the dome’s effects, but were intimidated by the control system. This year, we’re hooking it up to an XBox controller, something hopefully most of our guests are familiar with, so they can take a more active role in directing the patterns the LEDs show.

Project Interactivity Primarily Day Time,Chill Space,Education Based,Food Given,Music,Theme-related activities

Number of Campmates 16 to 20

Acculturation As in years past, Playasophy will be running our popular “Virgin 101” talk, an open discussion with veteran members to talk about Burning Man, the 10 Principles, and what they mean to us. This year the Playasophy member who led the discussion won’t be making it out to the playa, but he has trained up a pair of other dedicated members who are eager to help answer any questions and help out new burners. While passing the torch is a challenge for any organization, by passing on traditions to newer members we hope to keep the Virgin 101 talk going far into the future.

Physical Description The front of the camp will consist of 24 foot diameter geodessic dome, use for public hangout space during the day and as the wonderdome at night, as well as the hookah lounge. Behind those will be a carport converted to a kitchen, as well as space for members' tents (this area is private). In the back will be a smaller dome, 17 feet in diameter, a pair of yurts for housing more members, evaporation pools and parking.

Leave No Trace is a cornerstone of the Burning Man ethos and one of our Ten Principles. Practice the 5 R's: Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Restore and Respect.,Reduce trash when packing.,Create a detailed strategy or plan for Leaving NO Trace

During Burning Man, our camp will: Keep smelly garbage away from recyclables in BRC.,Clean As We Go and Keep It From Hitting the Ground.,Adopt the seven principles and practices of Leave No Trace at Burning Man.,Educate all camp members about minimizing our impact on the playa, so that my LNT crew can relax during the event knowing that all of our camp members are doing their part.,Conserve energy, use renewable energy sources and minimize waste.,Collect, reduce and properly dispose of grey water.,Use or creatively use discarded materials for all the components of our camp structure and decorations, so that our camp is sustainable year after year.

As we depart the playa, our camp will: Bring tools to rake, magnetic rake, sweep and pick up every last nail and wood shard that dropped on the playa surface so that I leave my space and my surrounding spaces better than I found them,Follow the 'rule of thumb for line sweeps'- (hyperlink http://www.burningman.com/environment/images/moopmap10fin.jpg) – performing required multiple sweeps of our camp before leaving BRC. (One sweep is not enough. Do as many passes as necessary: the strength of the line sweep is in the number of people and passes.),Organize neighborhood MOOP sweeps. (Joining with neighboring camps and sweeping an entire block together is the best insurance against MOOP hot spots, bringing your own MOOP scores down.),Secure all vehicles' loads to prevent windblown trash on the highway and in neighboring communities.

Activities for Mature Audiences/Health and Safety The NV Health Department frowns on the idea of communal water as it is a health risk to others. Burning Man states: Large quantities of water (250 gallons+) being used for projects that entail full body contact or consumption by people must be "potable" and come from state health department approved water sources. Water being used for misting systems and ways that do not involve consumption do not need health department clearance. It is wise to make sure that you have "potable" water and the source is reputable! Public pools and showers will not be permitted. Art pieces involving water are not considered showers unless they are labeled such and encourage bathing.
